Overview
Linkz aims to address the key service gap around sport and recreation programs during key school holiday breaks. It is widely known that during these periods the limited resources of many remote communities are severely tested as Sport and Recreation programs become one of the only functioning services. Without effective programs many communities report a significant increase in petty crime and other boredom related behaviours.

Therefore, in an effort to combat this situation, Linkz have developed a program whereby volunteers are sourced from aroundAustraliaand recruited to undertake a placement in various remote communities. The program involves a comprehensive training schedule in which volunteers complete First Aid, Sport and recreation training, cross-cultural education and a range of other elements to ensure that they are well equipped for their role in community. It is also important to note that Linkz provides these volunteers at minimal cost to the community however certain in-kind support is normally negotiated. This ordinarily includes assistance with securing accommodation and program resources such as vehicles and sports equipment.

In communities that have an existing Sport and Recreation program Linkz is able to offer the provision of a customised volunteer team to help facilitate school holiday programs under the direction of a Sport and Recreation officer, Youth Worker or equivalent. Linkz recognises that even well-established programs struggle to accommodate the increase in demand over school holiday periods and can therefore provide a cost effective means of support for these individuals. Alternatively, in communities without an existing program it may be possible to engage Linkz to establish a comprehensive program designed to cater to the specific needs of the community.

How does it work?

As all Linkz programs are tailored to suit the specific needs and resources of a given community the process for setting up a partnership varies considerably. As a general rule though the following roles and responsibilities normally apply:

Linkz Roles and Responsibilities

  • Recruiting and training volunteer teams
  • Organising logistics including flights and transport from closest airport to community
  • Briefings and de-briefings
  • Covering volunteer costs including food and transport
  • Developing a program schedule where necessary

Partner Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assistance sourcing appropriate accommodation
  • Identification of a community-based support person
  • Covering basic program costs (negotiable)
  • Providing information about the expectations and limits of the program

Details such as the size of the volunteer team, length of program and program dates are all negotiated on a community by community basis.

The focus of the program also varies from community to community. As an example, in some areas the Linkz teams are engaged to focus on running program activities while also working with and mentoring community members and young people who show an interest in leading and supporting activities. In others communities, and particularly those that have more well established programs, Linkz teams can be used as a means of training and support for community-based sport and recreation or youth work personnel.
